Hello Division 13 Families.
Happy New Year! We hope this finds you all doing well and staying healthy. We are so pleased to be back to school and teaching students in-person! Below you will find the events and reminders for the week.
Math:With Mrs. Brown, we will continue our unit on large digit addition. Some students are ready to begin a project using addition. With Ms. Nightingale, we are continuing with our perimeter and area unit. After our lesson, we played another game of Island Conqueror. The object of the game is for the players to find all the islands in Quadrilateral Bay and conquer them by correctly calculating their perimeter.
Writing: This week students will discuss what they did on their break. They will then write a detailed journal entry about their break with a focus on an effective opening sentence and closing sentence. Students will also be completing a New Year’s resolution project by choosing one little word for the year which they will write about.
Reading: We will begin reading our novel, Everest-The Contest, this week. Students will read and complete various reading response activities after reading.
Social Studies:This week we reviewed exploration and what we had learned about the age of exploration before the break, then watched a slideshow presentation about three main reasons for exploration: God, Glory and Gold. In this presentation we were introduced to some well-known explorers and then started an art project creating zentangle ships to display what we had learned in the three masts. Pictures to come!
Science: Yesterday, we began a new unit in Science. We are going to be learning about the different biomes on our planet and today we began with an introduction to biodiversity and ecosystems with the help of Bill Nye.
Physical Education: This week, we will begin our basketball unit.
