Welcome back Division 16 families. We hope you have had a relaxing break spent with family and friends.  Thank you to all of you who generously gave gifts and kind words to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Thornton, we appreciate your generosity.  Please look in your child's agenda on Tuesday for a thank you card.

Welcome to Mrs. Cannady who begins teaching Division 16 this Monday.  (From Mrs. Cannady: Happy New Year to my new students and their parents/guardians. I am very excited to start this new decade with you! Following the theme of ‘Starting a New’ students can be excited to begin exploring all new units this week. See below for more details smile

We hope the children are as excited as we are to begin a new term.  Please see below for this week's events and reminders.

Here are the events and reminders for this week and next week:

Math With Mrs. Brown, this week we will begin our unit on large digit addition.  Students will be adding double digit and triple digit numbers and demonstrate their ability to regroup and carry.  Students will also be given an opportunity to do some project based learning, where they will plan a camping trip, purchase their supplies and add up their costs with the hopes of staying within their budget.   With Mrs. Cannady: We will be starting our Geometry Unit. Our study begins with the review of 2D shapes in the polygon family.

Reading/Writing: 1) We will continue our Fairy Tale unit.  Students will be finishing  their first drafts of their fractured fairy tale.  Each student will be proofreading their work and completing a check, to make sure they have fulfilled the criteria. When completed, they will print their fairy tales and begin illustrations. 2) Students will read about resolutions and goal setting.  After discussion, students will reflect on the past year and consider what they want their focus to be for the coming year.  Once they have decided on a key word, they will create a display, where they will write their resolution word and describe their action plan in keeping this their focus for the year.

Science- We will begin the Earth and Sky Unit. Each student will activate their prior knowledge about the Earth, Sky and Moon and set the stage for understanding how observable patterns affect living and non-living systems here on earth. Student learning begins with the earth’s axis and rotation.

Social Studies-  Students will take a step back from their learning of European Explorers and focus on what life was like for the First People of the Northwest Coastal Region before they arrived. This will mark the beginning our our Two Worlds unit.

Physical Education: We will play cooperative games and begin basketball.
