We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend.  We are back into the swing of things in the classroom.  Here are the events and reminders for this week.

This week:

Math With Mrs. Brown, students will continue to work on place value.  This week we are working on identifying the value of a digit in a given number and writing it in expanded form.  We will also be playing "Trash Can Math".  Ask your child to teach you the game.  With Mrs. Thornton, students will continue to work on measurement. Specifically, we are working on area and perimeter and the relationship between the two.

Writing: This week our grade fives will continue working on their "All About Me" paragraph.  Our focus is on expanding simple sentences to compound sentences using a variety of connector words.  We are also using a thesaurus to find different ways to say words commonly used in writing.  Students are encouraged to use a variety of "Juicy" words in their writing.

Reading:  Students will continue to participate in silent reading every day this week. In addition, students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night.

Science- We are continuing to learn about animal super senses and biomes of the world. The students are currently working on creating their own species and will be conducting research to see what biome their particular creation would do best in.

Social Studies- With Orange Shirt day coming up next Monday September 30th  we will be learning about residential schools in class. This topic also ties into the social studies curriculum and we will be talking about the impact of colonization on First Peoples societies in British Columbia and Canada. We realize that this topic can be sensitive and some students may be impacted by this more than others and ask that you be open to discussions at home. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us.

Physical EducationWe continue with our first unit in soccer.
