Welcome to the new school year and our class moodle site.  This will be the place where we will keep you posted on all classroom events, homework, and important school dates. Please check this page often. Better yet, subscribe to this page and the weekly updates will go directly to your inbox.  

This week:

Math With Mrs. Brown, students will continue to complete math assessments and will be learning some new math games.  We will also complete our "Math About Me" pennants where students are creating various math sentences where the sum, difference, quotient and products are connected to numbers significant to each student. Finally, we will begin our unit on Place Value.  With Mrs. Thornton, students will begin their unit on measurement with the main focus on perimeter and area. 

Writing: This week our grade fives will be writing an "All About Me" paragraph.  Our focus is on expanding simple sentences to compound sentences using a variety of connector words.  We are also using a thesaurus to find different ways to say words commonly used in writing.  Students are encouraged to use a variety of "Juicy" words in their writing. 

Reading:  Students will continue to participate in silent reading every day this week.  I will be sending home instructions for our home reading program later in the week.  In addition, students will be participating in reading assessments.

Science-  Mrs. Thornton will begin the unit on Biomes and animal senses.

Physical EducationWe continue to play group games this week.  Our first unit in PE will be soccer and we will begin our focus on soccer skills at the end of the week. 

Upcoming Dates / Reminders:

  • Students will be bringing home information on our home reading program and will will receive reading sheets this week..  The reading sheets are to be kept in the front pocket of the agenda.  When your child has read for 20 minutes, sign the sheet please.  Reading sheets will be checked every week and children will receive a draw ticket every five nights they read. 
  • Please remember to check and sign your child's agenda every day. 
  • September Scholastic orders are coming home this week.   If you would like to order anything, please have them back by Friday, September 20th. Please make cheques payable to Scholastic Canada.
  • Meet the Teacher night is this Thursday, September 19th from 6:00-7:00.  We look forward to seeing you then. 
  • Monday, September 23 is our first Pro-D Day.  There is no school for students on this day.
  • Thursday, September 26th is Photo Day and the Terry Fox Run
  • Monday, September 30th  is Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters.  Children are encouraged to wear an orange shirt if they have one.
