Hello Families.
It's been a busy week and the blog is late...my apologies. I must begin by thanking Dave Stipec for walking with our group to the Stelly's Climbing Wall last week. I'd also like to thank all the parents who came to our skating field trip yesterday to tie skates and to skate with the children. Both the climbing and the skating were fun field trips and valuable experiences for the children.
So far this week we've said a sad goodbye to our friend Matthew, had a class auction, gone on a buddy skating field trip and we started our canoe carving project with Curtis Henry. We have also been working on a variety of academics which are listed below. Here are the events and reminders for this week:
Math: With Mrs. Brown, we continue to work on our unit on addition of large numbers. The unit will wrap up next week with a final test and we will begin subtraction of large numbers next week. With Ms. Rickson, this will be our final week on probability. On Friday, students will complete a quick "interview-style" assessment with Ms. Rickson.
Writing: Students are working on their good copies of their thank you letters. We hope to get them in the mail soon. Your child will need you to write the address of the thank you letter recipient in their agenda.
Reading: This week we continue our novel study on "Number the Stars". We will read chapters 5 and 6 and will be completing some reading response activities for each chapter. Ask your child about this book and have a discussion about it. Let them give you details by asking questions about what they are reading.
Growth Mindset - This week we will play a game called "fixed, growth, or both?" in which students need to identify which type of mindset the statement being read to them is. Once identified, students will discuss how (if necessary) to change the statement into a growth mindset.
Applied Skills, Design and Technology - We are continuing with our Google Slides presentation on "My Favourites..." during our computer time. Ms. Rickson has been excited to learn that many students are wanting to work on this at home as well, which they are more than welcome to do! This week we will also continue coding with our Spheros. Lastly, we will have a reminder about expected behaviour when using the Spheros, and when in the computer lab.
Physical Education: We continue to work on our gymnastics skills as we are lucky to have the district gymnastics mats for the month of January.
Social Studies: To continue our unit on resources in Canada, we will be learning about the Trans Mountain Pipeline. We will gather information from many different sources, debate the pros and cons of the pipeline, and consider the perspective of different involved parties. Keep an eye out on FreshGrade in the coming week for a summary of our findings.
