Hello Families. What a busy week we had to start out January.  We did not get to all the items from last week's blog, so you will see some repeats below. Here are our events and reminders for this week:

Math With Mrs. Brown, we continue to work on our unit on addition of large numbers. Students will write their first quiz on Thursday. With Ms. Rickson, we are jumping back in to probability. This week we will be using spinners to help us learn more about how to express probability of single outcomes.

Writing: Since we worked so much on our "Winter Break Journals" last week, we did not get to the letter writing. This week we will explore the different types of letter writing.  We will focus on friendly letters and the children will be writing a letter to someone in their family.  Expect to receive something in the mail in the next week.

ReadingThis week we continue  our novel study on "Number the Stars".  We will read chapters 3, 4 and 5 and will be completing some reading response activities for each chapter.  Ask your child about this book and have a discussion about it. Let them give you details by asking questions about what they are reading.

Growth Mindset -  This week, we focused on how to change fixed mindset statements into growth mindset statements. For example, instead of thinking "This is too hard," you can think "It will take me some time to get this."

Applied Skills, Design and Technology - We continue to work on getting some of our basic skills with the Spheros (learning how to log on, pair a Sphero to an iPad, and drive and AIM the Sphero) as well as some of the more complicated skills (coding using the "draw" and "block" functions). Ms. Rickson has been very impressed with how quickly we are mastering these skills! We are also continuing with our "My Favourites" presentations in Google Slides during our computer time.

Physical Education: On Monday we are headed out to play kickball and enjoy some beautiful weather.  For the remainder of the week, we will be working on our gymnastics skills as we are lucky to have the district gymnastics mats and equipment for the month of January.

Social Studies:  This week we will finish our maps depicting Canada's natural resources, and we will read a news article to learn about the pros and cons of fracking. We will also "mine" for chocolate chips in a cookie to explore the environmental impact of mining.

Art:  Last week we worked on  paintings based on the book, "Snowmen at Night".  We will complete thes and then we will begin our new piece of art using acrylics on canvas to create a special family portrait.
