Hello Families.
We hope everyone had a restful break. We are excited to be starting school again and eager to teach all the children in Division 13. Here are our events and reminders for this week:
Math: We continue to work on our unit on addition of large numbers.
Writing: This week we will explore the different types of letter writing. We will focus on friendly letters and the children will be writing a letter to someone in their family. Expect to receive something in the mail in the next week.
Reading: This week we begin our novel study on "Number the Stars". This is a fabulous book and I hope the children will enjoy the content and the activities we will be completing as we read the novel together.
Growth Mindset - It's 2019 and for the rest of this year we are going to focus on adopting a Growth Mindset. This week it's all about learning the difference between a "Growth" and a "Fixed" mindset. Parents, if you're interested, there is an amazing book by Carol Dweck that goes into detail about the power of adopting a Growth Mindset.
Applied Skills, Design and Technology - During our computer lab time, we are going to continue developing our Google Slides skills. Each student will create a 5-6 slide presentation about their favourite things. We will also be using the Spheros for the first time this year. A Sphero is a small, spherical robot that can be coded using an iPad. This week students will just be exploring the basics of how to control and care for our school Spheros. Lastly, we will be learning about coding in an "unplugged" activity where students will write sequential instructions (which is essentially a "code") detailing how to draw a specific item. Through this activity we will learn about the importance of being specific when writing code.
Physical Education: We will have another Buddy Gym session with Ms. Jolivet's class on Mondays. Each gym period starts with "Fitness First" where we complete a fitness circuit to music. Then, students have a choice between kickball outside with Ms. Rickson, or an indoor game with Ms. Jolivet. For the remainder of the week, we will be working on our gymnastics skills as we are lucky to have the district gymnastics mats and equipment for the month of January.
Social Studies: On Friday we will begin an exploration of the different natural resources found in the different regions of Canada. We will label a map of Canada to show which resources are found in each province, then we will organise the resources in a legend into the "renewable" or "non-renewable" category.
