Hello Families.

A huge thank you to all the parents who signed up for a parent-teacher interview last week.  We enjoyed talking with you about your child and hearing your stories.  It is always lovely to spend time with the families of the children we teach.

This blog covers last week and this week's events.  Last week was a busy week with students finishing and sharing some of their descriptive writing, along with learning rounding strategies in math and using our brand new watercolour pencil crayons to create a new painting. We also went swimming at Commonwealth Pool on Friday with all of the grade 4/5 classes. We had a lot of fun swimming and Ms. Rickson was so impressed by the bravery our class showed.  She saw so many people jump off of the high diving boards!  She was also very impressed at the respect level our students showed; they were wonderful representatives of Brentwood Elementary and our beliefs. Way ro go Division 13!

Here are the events and reminders for this week:

Math With Mrs. Brown:Students continue to work on learning the rules of rounding numbers.  This week they will apply what they learned last week to a rounding game where they will practice their skills.  With Ms. Rickson: Due to our Pro-D day this week and Remembrance Day last week, our Math has been put on hold. We will finish our graphs based on our survey questions next week.

WritingAs mentioned above, students finished their descriptive writing and shared their writing with their peers.  This week we will begin a new descriptive writing piece where students will be given different pictures and they will write a descriptive paragraph about their pictures.  After they have completed their writing, they will share with their peers, who will have to guess which picture the writing describes.

Social Studies: We are working very hard at preparing for our final assessment on our unit of Government. Students will finish their mind maps to demonstrate how the federal government is organized, and then they will develop assessment questions for the unit. Ms. Rickson will compile the assessment questions on Monday, and Ms. Brown will be giving the assessment later this week.

Science:Last week we finished the recording sheet for our "Dissolving M&M" experiment. Students worked through a checklist to make sure that they had all of the information they needed. We focused specifically on writing a complete sentence hypothesis and conclusion.

Physical Education: This week we continue to work on our soccer skills. Students have been split into four teams and will play a series of 8 mini soccer games throughout this week. In addition, we will be continuing our Buddy Gym time on Mondays with Ms. Jolivet's class tomorrow. Choices offered will likely be kickball (weather permitting) with Ms. Rickson or a game in the gym with Ms. Atwall (who has been filling in for Ms. Jolivet).

Art:  Students have been creating "Pop Art" by drawing an enlarged version of their favourite candy or chocolate. We will continue painting these this week with the amazing watercolour pencil crayons.

From Mark Guiguet regarding this afternoon:

Hello Families,

On Monday afternoon, the Central Saanich Police asked Brentwood Elementary School to move into Hold and Secure.  This required the locking of all outer doors and keeping all students and staff inside the school.  The request was made due to what police thought was a break and enter taking place close to the school.  As it turned out, there was no crime in progress and the doors were reopened after only ten minutes.
