Hello Parents.

We started our week yesterday with the grade fives visiting Bayside.  I hope they enjoyed their first real tour of the school and are looking forward to attending their new school next year.  While we were away at Bayside, the grade fours stayed at Brentwood and spent time together with Mrs Scott and Ms. Dilucca.  The rest of the week will be packed full of learning, with our continued research on women of history, a final math test on multiplication, poetry and preparation for our assembly next Wednesday.  Below is a more detailed look at our learning and some reminders for the month.

Math With Mrs. Brown: This week will be our last week working on multi-digit multiplication. Students have been learning the traditional method of solving multiplication problems and a  method called, "Stretch it Out". Students will write their final multiplication test on Thursday.  We will begin division next week. We are also working on learning our basic multiplication facts. Please practise this with your children at home. With Mr. Lurie: Students continue to learn about geometry concepts.
WritingThis week we continue to work on color poems using metaphors and similes,  and shape poems poems.  In addition to poetry, we have started an inquiry project on Canadian women through history.  Students are researching the person they chose to study and recording their notes on a graphic organizer.

Reading: We continue to work on our Reader's Theatre where students will perform a read aloud play in groups.  Performance date will be later in May.  We are also reading aritcles from Canadian Reader where the children will be working on finding the main idea of a reading passage.

Science: This week we continue our unit  on space.

Social Studies: Continue looking at one of Canada's natural resources: Forestry and Physiographic features of Canada

Art: Students have been creating a three step watercolour peacock.  We attempted to create swirls on our paper using shaving cream and watercolours.  While this was an absolute blast, it was a bust in terms of the end result.  We tried again the next week but used watercolours and salt instead.  This worked better and we are excited to finish this project and display it this week.

Physical Education: We will continue working on our volleyball skills this week.

Dance:  Students continued to practise the dance for the Fine Arts Festival and for the performance in May.  Mark your calendars now...the performance will be on Tuesday, May 15th at 12:30 in the gym or Wednesday, May 16th, at 9:00 in the gym.  Please choose to attend ONE of the performances only.

A note about X-Country...

Our last meet is this Wednesday. A couple of reminders,, parents are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the meet for your child. Once you arrive, please have your child check in by the Brentwood sign and wait nearby for the warm up and instructions. We will talk to the students about expectations for behaviour at the meet but we really appreciate parents helping to keep kids relatively calm (we understand it’s very exciting) and in the area of the Brentwood sign. It’s really important that students are not running over to the finish area before their race is over as this can cause delays and congestion at the finish line. They will see kids from other schools doing this, but it is discouraged and at Brentwood we ask that all students remain the the pre-race area until after their race. Once your child’s race is over please make sure they go and sign out with the teacher who is in charge of this (we will let them know ahead of time who this will be).

During the meet you may ask, “Why is this taking so long to start?” Please understand that all of the volunteers are doing their best to get things going as quickly as possible. We cannot start until all schools have arrived and the marshals are in place. If we do not have enough volunteers to marshals then we have to wait, for safety reasons, until we do. Our school hosts the second meet and we will need parents to volunteer at this meet. Please let me know if you are available. The other thing to keep in mind is that the grade 3 route is shorter than the grade 4 and 5 route. This means that after the grade 3s have run we need time to reset the course and move marshals. The grade 3s have typically run first at the first meet, but run last at both the second and third meet. This is so that the grade 4s and 5s can have the opportunity to run first in front of the larger crowd. If the grade 3s ran in between the 4s and 5s we would need to reset the course twice which would take too long. We truly do appreciate your patience and support. Go Brentwood!
