Hello Parents.

This past week was very productive.  Students worked on perfecting their dance performance for festival, continued working on multiplication, completed a clay project and shaving cream painting (What a mess!), wrote two new poems, started on inquiry project on Canadian women of history, and learned about edible insects like crickets and meal worms.  Needles to say, we were busy!  This coming week is equally busy and there is some very important information below regarding cross country, and the dance performance on Tuesday at U-Vic.  Please read all the way to the bottom of this post.

Math With Mrs. Brown: We continue to work on multi-digit multiplication. Students have been learning the traditional method of solving multiplication problems but were introduced to a new method called, "Stretch it Out".  Ask your child to demonstrate this method on a 2 digit by one digit equation  We are also working on learning our basic multiplication facts. Please practise this with your children at home. With Mr. Lurie: Students continue to learn about geometry concepts.
WritingThis week we are working on color poems using metaphors and similes,  and shape poems poems.  In addition to poetry, we have started an inquiry project on Canadian women through history.  Students have been introduced to a number of women who made a significant impact on Canada and used courage and bravery to pave the way for all Canadians. This week students will choose one woman to study and research her life.  Eventually students will be taught how to take their research notes and convert their information into a five paragraph essay.

Reading: We continue to work on our Reader's Theatre where students will perform a read aloud play in groups.  Performance date will be later in April or early May.  We are also reading aritcles from Canadian Reader where the children will be working on finding the main idea of a reading passage.

Science: This week we begin our unit  on space and will have a visit from the Astrological Society on Friday.

Social Studies: Continue looking at one of Canada's natural resources: Forestry and Physiographic features of Canada

Science: Devices that transform input energy (example: a glow stick -- chemical to light)

Physical Education: April is, "Net Month", where we will keep the nets up in the gym for the entire month of April.  We will be working on our volleyball skills this week.

Dance:  Students continued to practise the dance for the Fine Arts Festival and for the performance in May.  Mark your calendars now...the performance will be on Tuesday, May 15th at 12:30 in the gym.  In addition, students will be performing in the Fine Arts Festival at UVic on Tuesday, April 24th.  Parents are welcome to drop by to watch their child perform at the festival. For the festival on Tuesday, students need to arrive at the school early as our bus is leaving at 8:30. Please have your child at school by no later than 8:25 so we can do our attendance and get on the bus. In addition, students have been asked to wear their Be Kind shirts and black pants.  Please make sure your child has their costume ready by Monday.  I have been asking the children to bring in their Be Kind shirts early.  So far I have only received five.  If your child has outgrown their shirt, Mrs. Eng has told the children to wear a black shirt instead.

A note about X-Country...

Our first meet went great and our second meet will be this coming Wednesday.  A couple of reminders,, parents are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the meet for your child. Once you arrive, please have your child check in by the Brentwood sign and wait nearby for the warm up and instructions. We will talk to the students about expectations for behaviour at the meet but we really appreciate parents helping to keep kids relatively calm (we understand it’s very exciting) and in the area of the Brentwood sign. It’s really important that students are not running over to the finish area before their race is over as this can cause delays and congestion at the finish line. They will see kids from other schools doing this, but it is discouraged and at Brentwood we ask that all students remain the the pre-race area until after their race. Once your child’s race is over please make sure they go and sign out with the teacher who is in charge of this (we will let them know ahead of time who this will be).

During the meet you may ask, “Why is this taking so long to start?” Please understand that all of the volunteers are doing their best to get things going as quickly as possible. We cannot start until all schools have arrived and the marshals are in place. If we do not have enough volunteers to marshals then we have to wait, for safety reasons, until we do. Our school hosts the second meet and we will need parents to volunteer at this meet. Please let me know if you are available. The other thing to keep in mind is that the grade 3 route is shorter than the grade 4 and 5 route. This means that after the grade 3s have run we need time to reset the course and move marshals. The grade 3s have typically run first at the first meet, but run last at both the second and third meet. This is so that the grade 4s and 5s can have the opportunity to run first in front of the larger crowd. If the grade 3s ran in between the 4s and 5s we would need to reset the course twice which would take too long. We truly do appreciate your patience and support. Go Brentwood!
