Hello everyone,

I must start by thanking any of you who provided food or donations for the staff appreciation lunch.  The parent volunteers put together a lovely lunch in a beautifully decorated room.  Thank you!

Last week was a busy one with a visit from  Science Adventures teaching us Marbles and Megawatts. The students really enjoyed the energy game and I hope they told you all about it.   We also had a field trip to the Victoria Public Works was a great success! It was a great "behind the scenes look" at what is needed to run and maintain a city. Ask your child what they liked most about the visit.

This week we are working on our poetry anthologies and our cereal box novel reports.  These are due this week and the students should be working on the poems at home if they need the extra time.  Please ask your child about this.

We are also practising our running in preparation for the upcoming track meet on Tuesday, June 7th.  Everyone in our class has committed to participate in the track meet...yay class!  An information sheet was sent home last Friday with all the details about the day.  A reminder, parents are responsible for transportation to and from the track meet.  I would encourage all parents to organize rides this week and carpool if necessary.

Here are the rest of the events and reminders for this week:

This Week:

Writing: Students will continue to work on their poetry anthology which is now due this Thursday. The children should have plenty of time to work on this in class but if they need extra time to complete, you may see this project come home to be completed as homework. I will send an email if this becomes homework.

Reading:  Novel Study:  "Number the Stars".  We will be finishing our  "Cereal Box Novel Report".

Math:  Quiz on basic fractions tomorrow and we will be learning about equivalent fractions the rest of the week. In Geometry, students worked in groups to build six different prisms and pyramids and explored the number of edges, faces, and vertices found in each shape.

Science:   We continue our unit on Simple Machines.  This week students continue to  learn about the the wedge and  how it works and how it makes things easier.

Social studies - Students have startes a mini inquiry project. The focus of this project is on developing powerful questions and researching, rather than creating a final product. Students had the chance to explore the five possible topics - residential schools, immigration to Canada, natural resources, government, or the history of East and South Asian immigration - by browsing a number of books before deciding which topic they want to research. Students then began to develop questions that will guide their learning.

Art:  We will be working on glazing our clay creatures this week. We are also working on our end of the year scrapbooks.

P.E.:  Last week we started our track and field practice.  We will continue to practise running 100, 200 and 400 metres this week. Track meet is next Tuesday, June 7th.

Reminders:

Legacy Art Gallery Field Trip:  Wednesday, May 31st  ( Students need to bring a stick for an art project and they also need to know their family heritage for the origin stories.)

Tuesday, June 7th - District Track Meet at Uvic

Mark your calendar! - Division 12 Term Three Celebration of Learning - Still  deciding on a date but it will likely be on Monday, June 12th or Tuesday June 13th.  Parents are invited to see the children perform their Reader's Theatre plays, listen to their song, and take a look at their work from this term. More informatin to follow.
