Hello Parents.  We've had a great start to our week, with a grade five visit to Bayside.  Students had a tour of the school and finished with a pizza lunch. Grade fours stayed at the school, had an extended P.E. time and completed a writing assignment with Mr. Meadows.  so far this week, we have  also continued working on our top secret art project, learned about 2 digit divisors and experimented with inclined planes. The rest of the week will be as busy as the past two days. Here are the events and reminders for the remainder of this week.

This Week:

Writing: Students will finish their "Top 30 List" of poems and begin their poetry anthology project. More information to follow.

Reading:  Novel Study:  "Number the Stars".  We will be working on the "Cereal Box Novel Report".  Please send in a cereal box if possible.

Math:  We continue to work on long division.  We are currently working on long division with one digit divisors and three digit dividends but the students have also been introduced to questions with two digit divisors.

We are also continuing our  geometry unit and are exploring  and sorting shapes based on their lines of symmetry.

Science:   We continue our unit on Simple Machines.  This week students will learn about the inclined planes and  how it works and how it makes things easier.

Social Studies -This week we will be learning about the election process and students will learn about some of the candidates running for the provincial election.

Art:  We are working on a top secret clay project.

P.E.:  Our focus is on volleyball  skills and cooperative games.

Reminders:

Legacy Art Gallery Field Trip- Wednesday, May 31st - A permission slip was sent home today for this field trip. Please send the signed form back with  payment as soon as possible.

Grade Fives:  1. Please send a baby picture for the yearbook. This can be sent by email or you can send a hard copy which will be returned. 2. Bayside Clothing orders due this Friday, May 5th. 3. Camp letter and packing list was sent home today.

Cross Country - Last race Wednesday, May 3rd -We have our final  meet this week. Just a friendly reminder that parents are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the meet for your child. Once you arrive, please have your child check in by the Brentwood sign and wait nearby for the warm up and instructions. We will talk to the students about expectations for behaviour, but we really appreciate parents helping to keep kids relatively calm (we understand it’s very exciting) and in the area of the Brentwood sign. It’s really important that students are not running over to the finish area before their race has taken place as this can cause delays and congestion at the finish line. They will see kids from other schools doing this, but it is discouraged and at Brentwood we ask that all students remain the the pre-race area until after their race. Once your child’s race is over please make sure they go and sign out with the teacher who is in charge of this (we will let them know ahead of time who this will be).

During the meet you may ask, “Why is this taking so long to start?” Please understand that all of the volunteers are doing their best to get things going as quickly as possible. We are not able to start until all schools have arrived and the marshals are in place. If we do not have enough volunteers to marshals then we have to wait, for safety reasons, until we do. The other thing to keep in mind is that the grade 3 route is shorter than the grade 4 and 5 route. This means that after the grade 3s have run we need time to reset the course and move marshals. The grade 3s have typically run first at the first meet, but run last at both the second and third meet. This is so that the grade 4s and 5s can have the opportunity to run first in front of the larger crowd. If the grade 3s ran in between the 4s and 5s we would need to reset the course twice which would take too long. We truly do appreciate your patience and support. Go Brentwood!

Pro-D Day next Monday- No school for students.

Popcorn Day - Wednesday, May 10th

Fun Lunch - Wednesday, May 17th

New Gym Floor:  In an attempt to keep the gym floor clean, I am insisting the kids wear clean shoes.  Please make sure your child has a pair of clean shoes ready for gym.
