Hello Parents.

We had a great start to our week today with a very busy day.  We began our day reading poetry and students worked on completing their, "Top 30 List".  Following poetry, we worked on a top secret clay project with Mrs. Sinclair Wise's class.  After lunch we had an amazing time with Mr. Braun and his OP 11 class, participating in fun physical education activities planned by the Stelly's students.   After recess, we participated in an activity to determine weather a screw or nail was more efficient when putting it into wood. Ask your child about his/her day...they should have a lot to talk about.

Here are the events and reminders for the rest of the week.

This Week:

Writing: Students will work on creating their "Top 30 List" of poems.

Reading:  Novel Study:  "Number the Stars".  We will be reading the final chapter of our novel and students will begin their "Cereal Box Novel Report".  Please send in a cereal box if possible.

Math:  We continue to work on long division.  We are currently working on long division with one digit divisors and three digit dividends.  Students wrote a quiz last week and it will be sent home tomorrow. Ask your child about their results.

We also started our geometry unit by exploring and sorting quadrilaterals based on multiple attributes (parallel lines, length of sides, etc.). Next week we are going to explore and sort shapes based on their lines of symmetry.

Science:   We continue our unit on Simple Machines.  This week students will learn about the screw, how it works and how it makes things easier.

Social Studies - We finished chapter 3 of Fatty Legs and students answered a series of response questions related to the reading. Ask your child about Olemaun's experience at residential school. How does it compare to Brentwood Elementary?

Art:  We continue to paint and glaze our clay creatures. They should be coming home soon. We are also working on a top secret clay project.

P.E.:  Our focus is on volleyball  skills and cooperative games.

Reminders:

Cadence Music Group - Wednesday, April 26th - Parents are invited to attend this awesome performance.

Cross Country - Wednesday, April 26th We have our second  meet this week. Our school hosts this meet and we will need parents to volunteer at this meet. Please let Mrs. MacGregor or Mrs. Sinclair-Wise know if you are available. Also, just a friendly reminder that parents are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the meet for your child. Once you arrive, please have your child check in by the Brentwood sign and wait nearby for the warm up and instructions. We will talk to the students about expectations for behaviour, but we really appreciate parents helping to keep kids relatively calm (we understand it’s very exciting) and in the area of the Brentwood sign. It’s really important that students are not running over to the finish area before their race has taken place as this can cause delays and congestion at the finish line. They will see kids from other schools doing this, but it is discouraged and at Brentwood we ask that all students remain the the pre-race area until after their race. Once your child’s race is over please make sure they go and sign out with the teacher who is in charge of this (we will let them know ahead of time who this will be).

During the meet you may ask, “Why is this taking so long to start?” Please understand that all of the volunteers are doing their best to get things going as quickly as possible. We are not able to start until all schools have arrived and the marshals are in place. If we do not have enough volunteers to marshals then we have to wait, for safety reasons, until we do. The other thing to keep in mind is that the grade 3 route is shorter than the grade 4 and 5 route. This means that after the grade 3s have run we need time to reset the course and move marshals. The grade 3s have typically run first at the first meet, but run last at both the second and third meet. This is so that the grade 4s and 5s can have the opportunity to run first in front of the larger crowd. If the grade 3s ran in between the 4s and 5s we would need to reset the course twice which would take too long. We truly do appreciate your patience and support. Go Brentwood!

Pro-D Day this Friday - No school for students.

New Gym Floor:  In an attempt to keep the gym floor clean, I am insisting the kids wear clean shoes.  Please make sure your child has a pair of clean shoes ready for gym.

Refex Math:  It has been decided that the PAC will not renew the school subscription for Reflex Math.  As a result, students will no longer be able to access their accounts. Instead of Reflex, it is expected that students spend 20 minutes a night working on Prodigy Math. If you have any questions, please email me.
