Hello everyone.

I must begin with a hug thank you to all of you who sent in food and supplies for our breakfast last week.  There was so much food!  Also, thanks goes to Meghan Anderson, Doug Walker and Michelle Martin for being the volunteers representing Division 12.  We are so grateful for your gift of time and helping to make our breakfast a success.  It was wonderful for the children to share a meal with their buddies.

I would also like to thank all the parents who attended our skating field trip.  Having extra hands to tie skates was a great help.  We had so much fun skating with all of the other grade 4/5 classes.

This week is a short week but is proving to be a busy one.  Here are our events and reminders for the week.

This Week:

Writing: Students are typing their good copies this week and hopefully will complete by Thursday.

Spelling pattern: Double consonants.

Reading:  Novel Study:  "Number the Stars".  We will continue reading chapter one and students will complete character sketches of the characters introduced in the chapter.

Math:   Multiplication drills; *Please help your child learn their multiplication tables.*Multiplication: We have been focusing on the traditional method of multiplication.  This week the children will learn some new methods and strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication problems.  Statistics and Probability: We continued to explore probability by designing an experiment to answer the following question: "A local restaurant gives out a toy with each kids meal. There are six different awesome toys and you’re randomly given one at each visit. You can’t exchange toys or request toys. You get what you get and you don’t get upset. A lady approaches you because she knows what a great mathematician you are and she wants to know “About how many kids’ meals do I have to order to get at least one of each toy?"Students rolled a 6-sided die and graphed the number of rolls it took to get all 6 toys. Students quickly realized that the more times they conducted the experiment, the more accurate their suggestion would be.

Science:  This is our final week studying the human body.  Students will complete their posters and hopefully bring them home to show you what they have learned.

Socials Studies: Unfortunately, we had to postpone part two of our buddy story drama until our next Friday together (March 3rd as this Friday is a non-instructional day). Instead, we continue to explore our big question - "What types of discrimination have immigrants to Canada or Aboriginal families faced?" - by continuing to compare our school to the residential school system. Students were asked to consider multiple perspectives and think critically while watching a 1955 Aboriginal residential school propaganda video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_V4d7sXoqU). They questioned the purpose behind the video and began to unpack some of the truths many residential school students faced, such as separation from families, poor diets, and mandatory haircuts. We compared some of these facts to our school life by completing Venn diagrams.

Art:  We will be working with clay this week.  Grade fours will be making clay plates while the grade fives will be making pinch pot creatures.

P.E.:  Our focus is on basketball skills and cooperative games.

Reminders:

Our fields are WET! - Boots, jackets, hats and gloves will make  outside playtime so much better!  It is a good idea to pack an extra change of clothes as well as the grounds are very wet! We need to get out and get some fresh air so this will really help us have fun!

Agendas, Reading Calendars and Reflex: Please check and sign your child's agenda every night.  Students should also be reading and doing 20 minutes of Reflex Math each night. Don't forget to sign your child's reading calendar when they have completed their nightly reading.

Non Instructional Day - Friday, February 24th - No school for students.

Symphony Field Trip - February 27th - Permission forms to go home on Tuesday.

Grade Five Transition Dates:  Hard to believe it's time for us to start thinking about Grade 5 transition.  Grade 5 parents, please click on the link to see important dates for transition to Bayside.
