We had another busy but successful week.  We welcomed Mr. Josh Sczcepanowski to the classroom who will be teaching on Wednesday afternoon, Thursdays and Fridays.  (His name will appear on this blog soon). In Reading, the children practised reading and summarizing facts and learned how to find key information from factual articles.  In Writing, the students continued to finish their personal letters and were reminded when and where to use commas in their writing.  We also began Spelling Workshop where we focused on words that have the /s/ sound pattern. In Math,  the students continued to work on addition with regrouping, reviewed place value, and discussed expanded form. In Science, we began our "Human Body Unit". Finally, the students started mapping in Socials Studies.  Students learned about cartography and how to read maps and discussed what information is found on a map. They also worked in groups to create their own scale maps of the classroom.

On Friday, students participated in the Terry Fox run  which is always a fun event for them. Ask your child about this and how many laps they ran.

Here is what we are hoping to accomplish next week:

Reading: We will continue to practice reading non-fiction and summarizing the information held within.  We will also write our own non-fiction pieces following the rules we've learned and present them to our peers.

Writing:  We will read a book titled, "The Best Part of Me".  Students will then choose their "Best Part" and complete a writing piece about it.

Grammar:  Continued work on commas and periods.

Spelling Workshop:  Finding words which fit with the /s/ pattern and adding them to our word lists.

Math: We will learn about taking expanded integers and writing them in standard form, and we will solve word problems using place value.  We will also continue on our addition with regrouping.  There will be a quiz this Wednesday on addition with regrouping.  We will also complete a weekly drill and do some word problem discussions during "Math Wall."

Science:  Students will continue to learn about the human body systems.

Socials Studies: We will continue to use maps to find our place in the world and learn about where we come from.  We will also complete the booklets that have been created describing Canada's founding peoples, and we will begin our work with the other 4 and 5 classes as we prepare for our Amazing Race project (where we will work in teams to discover everything we can about Canada's provinces and territories)!

P.E. :  We are working on our soccer skills and playing games.

Reminders for next week:

-Wednesday we will be spending the morning creating a sewing project.  We are in need of parent volunteers.  If anyone can spare some time, we will be working in the Multi-Purpose Room from 8:40-11:15.  You do not need to know how to sew to be a helper!

-Popcorn Day: Wednesday, October 12

-All forms are due now.  If you have not filled in the student verification forms and the permission forms for media us etc. please do so as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
