A few bits for the week...

  • Get to Know Your School Night is next Thursday, September 22 from 5:30 to 6:30.  Drop in, tour the school and meet your child(ren)'s teachers!

  • Sharing (aka Show and Tell) starts next week. Each day, one child will bring ONE item to show and talk about with the class. Take a few minutes to help your child choose an item. It can be anything, a toy, musical instrument, photo, etc. The idea is to get them talking in front of the group. Maybe talk together about what they might say about it. If your child wants to show a digital photo, email it to me at twestwood@sd63.bc.ca.  Next week: Monday- Akaisha, Tuesday-Brady, Wednesday-Brooklyn, Thursday-Callum, and Friday-Cole.

  • I encourage the use of a reusable water bottles here in class. Children can take sips throughout the day without worrying about spilling coloured drinks on their materials. I won't say don't send juice boxes because that is your choice but I will say most cannot finish one in a single sitting and then they can potentially end up a sticky mess.

  • Soon I will be posting a homework calendar with little activities to do daily with your child. It is voluntary but do have a look. Many of the activities are things you do already!

  • Photo Day is Thursday, September 29!

  • Kindergarten students are welcome to join Action Mornings at 8am each day but because it is open to students of all ages, you may want to consider whether it is a good idea for your child.  Students are to enter and exit through the outside gym doors by the stairway.  They must be in the gym prior to 8:10 and stay for the duration of the session. Students will be dismissed from the outside gym doors and are then expected to make their own way to where our class lines up.  A reminder that Action Morning can be cancelled due to a variety of reasons and should therefore not be relied upon for daycare needs.  In the event of a cancellation, we will do our best to post a message on the school website as early as possible. A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Bagshaw who makes Action Morning so much fun for everyone!

  • Brentwood Elementary is excited to announce that we have a team registered for the Thrifty Foods Kids Run at the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon again this year.  This is a family event and all students, siblings, relatives, and friends ages 12 years and younger are invited to register as part of our school team.  The run is on Sunday,October 9th at 10:15am.  All runners receive a t-shirt with our school name on the back (only if you register by September 23rd), a goody bag, race number and a medal.  Parents can walk/run along with their children but do NOT have to register.  The fee is $18 and goes to support Kidsport Greater Victoria. You can register online at www.runvictoriamarathon.com/racing-events/thrifty-foods-kids-run/ or by printing off a registration form and mailing, or dropping off, your payment as instructed on the form.  Be sure to indicate that you are part of the Brentwood Elementary team to have your child's race package delivered directly to the school prior to run day.  The school with the highest percentage of participants will receive $1000!  If you have any questions please contact Mrs. MacGregor.

  • We know that bullying is sometimes a concern for parents but we would like you to be aware that here at Brentwood, we recognize a difference between bullying and social learning. Please have a look at this link.

  • Our school counsellor, Mrs. Toronitz has put together a Padlet of Community Resources. Clicking on the icons opens them directly to their webpage.

  • School-age children’s eyes are constantly in use in the classroom and at play so it’s important to ensure they are working their best.  Your child may not realize they have a vision problem.  They may simply assume everyone sees the way they do.  Eye See … Eye Learn® is a program that provides free eye exams and eyeglasses, if necessary, to Kindergarten children by a BC Doctor of Optometry. Visit www.bcesel.ca to book your child’s eye exam with a participating doctor.

Have a great weekend!
