Hello Division 13 Families.

As we move into this term, grade five families will receive more information about transitioning to middle school.  Last week we sent home a few pages with information about our transition to Bayside.  Please let us know if you have any questions.  This is also the time of year where we prepare for our goodbye to grade five students.  Grade five parents, please send Mrs.Brown a copy of your child in kindergarten.  This could be sent digitally or you could send in a hard copy and it will be scanned and then returned to you.

Below you will find the events and reminders for the week.

Math:With Mrs. Brown students will finish our unit on financial literacy.  Next week we will begin long division.   With Ms. Nightingale, we are reviewing lines, rays and line segments, as well as different ways to classify angles. We are then going to review types of triangles and then start an art project to showcase what we have learned.

Writing: We are learning about various types of figurative language and how students can create more interesting writing by including figurative language in their written work. Last week we learned about hyperboles and onomatopoeia.  This week we will learn about similes and metaphors.

Reading: We will continue our weekly, “Tune Tuesday” where students read through lyrics of a song and we analyze meaning from the text using context clues. We will also begin the introduction to our book club for the term.

Science: In Science, students are nearly finished presenting their biome projects. They put so much effort into their dioramas and took suggestions to add more detail in their research booklets. They should be proud of all of their hard work. We will be starting our new unit on Matter if we have time today.

Socials Studies: We have spent a lot of time learning about explorers and interactions with indigenous groups in Canada. This week, we will be learning about the fur trade.

Art: This week we will complete our pop art/onomatopoeia art.

Physical Education: On Mondays for the foreseeable future, we are starting a new fitness unit.  It will involve music and a lot of movement. Students are reminded to make sure they have a pair of runners, not sandals or boots, to help them feel comfortable while participating in these gym blocks.  For the remainder of the week we will begin our unit on volleyball and continue to play a variety of cooperative games.
