Hello Families.
Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing holiday with your family. We are excited to return to teach Division 14. There’s lots happening this month.
Below are the events and reminders for the week. If you have any questions, please email us.
Math: With Mrs. Brown, we will continue to add large numbers. This week students will begin to work independently on various levels of addition questions. Students will be encouraged to challenge themselves with the questions they choose. With Ms. Westmacott, we will practice measuring and calculating perimeter with pixel name designs.
Writing: We were unable to complete our persuasive writing before the break. So, this week, we will continue with this writing.
Reading: This week we begin our first novel study. We will be reading, Number the Stars and completing a variety of reading response activities with each chapter.
Science: In science we will be discussing the circulatory system some more, as well as introducing some concepts of simple machines for our upcoming cardboard arcade display.
Social Studies: In social studies we will be learning about the numbered treaties with First Peoples.
Physical Education: This week we will start with a fitness circuit and then we will continue with basketball skills.
Art: We will be creating with clay this week.
Reminders
Cardboard: Over the next two months, we ask families to begin saving cardboard for our cardboard arcade which will happen at the end of February. Students will begin planning and creating their cardboard games in the next couple of weeks. Any cardboard you can save for this, would be appreciated. Please do not send the cardboard to school until you receive an email asking for it. We don't have the space to store cardboard for 23 students.
Maturation Talks: On Wednesday, January 6th and Thursday, January 7th, we will be going over our maturation curriculum. Mrs. Brown will be discussing puberty and hygiene on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will finish maturation with a virtual discussion with a representative from Island Sexual Health. Please do not be misled by the name, "Island Sexual Health", we only discuss changes that come with puberty and a greater need for attention to personal hygiene. If you have any questions about this, please email me.
Families on Property- Ensuring the well-being of our school community is our number one priority. We are noticing that there is some congestion occurring on all sides of the school. This is a reminder that families should drop off/pick up children at the edges of the school property. We also remind you that mask usage is a protective measure where it is not possible to maintain physical distance. This would be the case for adults at all times on our property and is in alignment with our staff's health and safety plan. Thank you for working together with us to help keep our school healthy.
Please contact out Principal, Sara Salemink, at ssalemink@saanichschools.ca if you have questions. We are all in this together.
INDOOR SHOES: As the weather turns, we ask you to send a pair of indoor shoes with your child. It is preferable to have the shoes stay in the classroom but it is also okay to have them in the backpack if they need to go back and forth between school and home.
