Hello Families.

Here are the events for this week and reminders for the month of February

Math With Mrs. Brown, we continue to work on subtraction of large numbers. Students will write their first quiz on Wednesday.  We will also be reviewing financial literacy and each student will have a one on one interview to demonstrate what they know about the value of currency.  Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate or learn how to make change and count it back.  This financial literacy will be an ongoing process until each student has had an opportunity to show what they know. Finally, we began our "Math Wall" last week and will continue with this once a week for the rest of the year.  Math Wall gives students the opportunity to solve math word problems and riddles together using  math language as they discuss possible solutions to math problems.  The purpose is to get students comfortable using math language as they try to solve problems together. Ask your child about this.  With Ms. Rickson, we will respond to another visual prompt obtained from "mathbeforebed.com" to promote our spatial thinking. This time, we will compare our answers to our peers and have a discussion about why some may come up with other responses.

Reading/WritingThis week we continue  our novel study on "Number the Stars".  We will read chapters 8 and 9 and will be completing some reading response activities for each chapter. This week the focus for response will be on crafting a well structured reading response paragraph using details from the reading passages and making connections to what students have read.  Ask your child about this book and have a discussion about it. Let them give you details by asking questions about what they are reading.

Science We are continuing our study on simple machines by creating sketch notes to explain  each simple machine's function. We will then begin to learn the "Design Thinking" process so that we can start to plan our arcade game. Our inspiration for our Intermediate Science Arcade comes from Caine's Arcade (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U).

Applied Skills, Design and Technology -We are continuing with our Google Slideshow "My Favourites." Students are working on adding backgrounds, animations, and colour schemes. On Friday we have the Spheros booked for us to continue developing our coding skills.

Physical Education: We continue to work on our gymnastics skills as we are lucky to have the district gymnastics mats until the end of this week.

Art :  This week we will finish our Valentine heart art using felts and pencil crayons.

S.T.E.M.: Chinese New Year is upon us and it is the "Year of the Pig".  This week we will do a special STEM project where students will be given some materials and will need to use those materials to build a pig pen model.  Students will work in groups to draft a plan and then use the materials to build the pig pen they planned including all the required criteria.
