Hello Families.

As we move into December, we will endeavour to keep our classroom calm, where the students will participate in some festive activities but the focus will also include the prescribed curriculum.  We want to maintain a balance for the children, so key learning continues to take place throughout the month. This month will be very busy, so scroll all the way down to find all the important dates and reminders.  I will be sending out a separate email with some of the important dates and reminders later this week.

Here are our events and reminders for the next two weeks:

Math With Mrs. Brown: While we tried to finish rounding last week, we will write our final quiz this week and begin our study of addition of large numbers next week. With Ms. Rickson: We are starting our unit on Probability. Monday, we discussed what probability is, and how we can measure it. On Friday we will explore the probability involved in flipping a coin.

Reading and WritingThis week we continue to explore the story "Tuesday" by David Weisner.  Students have been viewing the pictures from the book and then, writing what they think is happening in the story.  The children will be encouraged to use the connector words we have been learning in class and also to use as much descriptive language as possible. After students have shared their writing with the class, they will create their own story about what they think happens next Tuesday.

ScienceOn Monday we went did Science with our buddy class! There were 4 different experiment stations and we rotated through them. We had so much fun creating oobleck, watching raisins dance in soda water, blowing up a balloon with baking soda and vinegar, and making colours explode in milk with dish soap! We came back to our classroom and reflected on things that we noticed and wondered during the experiments. On Friday we will be with our buddies again to learn about different types of solids using hot chocolate! Please bring a mug for Friday to participate smile

Physical Education: We will be focusing on competitive and co-operative games for the rest of the month.  In addition, we will participate in "Fitness Friday" at the end of each week. On Monday,  had buddy gym today with Ms. Jolivet's class; students had a choice between bench ball and a frosty game of capture the flag outdoors!

Tech - Now that we are all on Google Classroom, we started our first tech assignment in the computer lab. We are working our way through a Google Slides Scavenger Hunt to learn how to become Google Slides Ninjas!

Art:  We are extremely busy working on holiday crafts.  Many of the projects are top secret, as the children are planning to give the projects as gifts for Christmas.  For one of the projects, we have asked the children to bring in bits of fabric and little embellishments from the dollar store.  This is not meant to be a huge expense...just a couple of dollars should get buttons, bells, snowflakes or whatever the children need to decorate their item.  We do have many items in the classroom they can use if you are unable to get items from the dollar store.

Report Language Changing

Hello families,

The language we use to report on students' progress is changing throughout the province. We are moving towards a continuum of progress for reporting for students in K-9, and you will receive the following letter as an insert with your child's report card this term. Should you have questions about these changes to language, please feel free to email me at sjolivet@saanichschools.ca or speak with your child's teacher.
