Hello parents.
While last week was only four school days, it was very busy and the children accomplished a lot during the short week. In math, students finished the subtraction unit with a test. Tests will be posted on Fresh Grade and the hard copies will be sent home this week. We also began a new unit on financial literacy. In language arts, students continued to learn about verbs, finished their book trailers for the novel, Holes, and started brainstorming for their personal narratives. In social studies students learned about Christopher Columbus and the European explorers. In Science, students continued to investigate states of matter by . In art, students worked on their abstract portraits. Finished portraits were posted on Fresh Grade and were taken to the School Board Office to be displayed.
Here are the events and reminders for this week:
Math: With Mrs. Brown:This week we begin our unit on Financial Literacy. With Mr. Lurie: This week, Grade 4/5 students will continue their unit on geometry, understanding nets and identifying elements of 3-D shapes.
Writing: This week students will work on the pre-writing stage of their personal narratives.
Reading: Students are completing a comic strip which summarizes their favourite part of the novel, Holes. We are also starting our final project which is creating a book trailer with the iPads.
Socials Studies: We are looking at the trade routes and the fall of Constantinople.
Science: We will continue our unit on the phases of matter (molecules).
Physical Education: For the month of January, we will be completing a gymnastics unit using various equipment and foam shapes set up in the gym.
Dance: Students continued learning a new dance for the Fine Arts Festival and for the performance in May. Mark your calendars now...the performance will be on Tuesday, May 15th at 12:30 in the gym.
