Hello parents. We have a busy week ahead with a number of reminders. Here are the events for the week:

Math:  With Mrs. Brown, students have been working on place value.  Students have been converting numbers in their standard form to expanded form and writing the numbers in words.  We will begin ordering numbers this week.
With Mr. Lurie, students have begun work on their math unit on measurement. They have reviewed how to measure length using centimetres and millimetres, and are currently working on solving perimeter problems. Topics to come include area, mass and volume.
Writing:  Students just completed their writing assignment describing things they find challenging and coming up with ways in which they will overcome these challenges.  This week, students are working on writing a persuasive paragraph from the perspective of a pumpkin who wishes to stay in the pumplin patch.  In their paragraph, students will try to persuade the reader to choose another pumpkin for carving.

Reading: Our focus this week is becoming good reading detectives.  Students will look for clues in reading passages to answer questions specific to the text.

Socials Studies: Students have begun to look at Coastal BC, approximately 2000 years ago, and the conditions (physical landscape, climate, flora and fauna) that allowed for the success of humans. The focus is currently on First Peoples before contact with Europeans. Units on early contact and the fur trade will follow.
Science Students are working on understanding the interdependence of humans and their environment (ecosystems). The focus will be on how living  things sense, respond and adapt to stimuli in their environment. As a class, students are asking big questions for the purpose of scientific inquiry such as "How do we care for the environment?" and "How does it provide for us?" They have also used the computer lab to build a table using LibreOffice Writer and to answer questions from their reading on condors. They can tell you why scientists track condors using  radio tags instead of leg bands.

Art:  Students are working with felts and pencil crayons to create a picture using symbols of Fall.  We will also be using Model Magic to create owls to hang in the classroom.

Reminders:

 1. Fire Hall Field Trip:  We will be heading to the fire hall Tuesday, October 3rd from 9:00-12:00.  Please send a pocket snack with your child.

2.  IRide: We will be participating in IRide on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.  Students who have their own bikes and helmets are encouraged to bring them to school.  If your child does not have a bike or is unable to bring their bike to school, The IRide people will provide a bike and helmet fro your child.   Please make sure you sign the online waiver or your child will not be allowed to participate.   Click on the link below to access the waiver.

3. Emails:  when emailing Mrs. Brown or Mr. Lurie, please make sure you include both of us in every email.  It makes it much easier if you keep both teachers in the loop...thank-you.

Well done, everyone. A good start to the year.
